Choosing a theme
Posted on November 20, 2008 in Canvas Standard
I've been bedevilled by indecision for months now on the major project for my current level 3 Painting course at the Open College of the Arts. The task is a series of six paintings on a theme. It doesn't sound so difficult, so what's been the problem? First, I had immense difficulty choosing the theme. Once you get to thinking about it, there's no such thing as an easy theme. Like an essay in an English course, a series needs a point of view. I think I'm an intuitive painter by nature, and in a way, the idea of painting a series is anti-intuitive. A series needs advance planning and may involve some repetition. But back some months ago I wasn't thinking along those lines. It was more a question of whether to choose something from the list of suggestions offered in the course book and just blaze away, or whether to devise something of my own, or what. I did try something from the list. One of the options was "Flowers". I paint still life quite often so that would seem to be just the thing, but I didn't feel enthusiastic about it and it fizzled out. No point of view, I thought, or none that I was aware of. I might think diferently about that in future. Eventually I did come up with a theme, provisionally called "Transitions" that I thought would be exciting to do and would stretch me as a painter. It would focus on different things that had influenced me over the years. I worked on this for months, and produced a lot of stuff, including numerous experimental studies and a couple of attempts at finished pieces. But somehow, whenever I tried to map out how it would go overall, a sort of visual outline, I had trouble getting past four pieces. One of the problems which I became aware of only gradually was that the "Transitions" idea, while it might be exciting, doesn't play to my strengths, which are drawing and painting from life. This is why "Flowers" or the "Park" might have been a better bet after all, and would be more in line with where I want my so-far non-existent style to go. However, having put so much into the "Transitions" idea, I was reluctant to drop it altogether without resolution. I wanted to carry it through and see where it would take me. So I had another battle with the dreaded visual outline. I finally got one done, and looking at it objectively, along with research on famous themes such as Monet's Haystacks and Van Gogh's Sunflowers , it became clear that the project as conceived was much too broad and diverse and it lacked cohesion. So, I narrowed it down and tightened it up, and it changed into more of a "Childhood" theme, which, surprise, surprise, is in the list. It still doesn't play to my strengths, because I live thousands of miles from where I grew up and have to work from family photos and memory. But it's more coherent as a series now, and once I got to this point, making a visual outline of the six pieces went more smoothly. One of the things I've learned so far is that it's better not to go against one's nature if at all possible. But I'm still glad to be doing this project, however it turns out, because I need to get it out of my system. I've also learned that, for a series, the visual outline should be done early rather than late. If it's not working out, something may be wrong with the concept. I'm planning in the next few days or weeks to post one of the pieces in progress at different stages -- good, bad or awful. cheap oem software buy software

I also intend to learn how to make attractive original blog templates. I am on line with a 10mb / 10mb WAN from http://comx.dk/ and Google mail is noticeably faster. So far I have set up a new router (the owner had plugged the WAN cable in a LAN socket but I didn't check that first) and got a Sony digital camera bought in England to download 719 snaps to a bought in Germany laptop wih WinME in german . . . . . To deal with the heat wave I am staying in for the afternooons and drinking lots of tap water precooled in my fridge, and after Le Tour on TV with the english commentary from http://eurosport.com/ on the computer is over, I then take a siesta - or an astronaut nap (about 45 minutes asleep) I am doing my shopping in the mornings, and by phone, and taking lots of snbaps for my picture bank. The snaps blogs are really slow on dial-up so you really need broadband for the high graphics content.. I hope to get family Tree Maker running on the Macintosh soon - there are three possibilities as to how. Reunion was highly recommended but I found thr GUI really irritating and out of date. buy software cheap oem software

They want one because it looks nice and the pretty site seems to be a status symbol for them. Really, it isn't the best direction to go if you are concerned about search engine optimization. I need to get them to reword the site to increase the keyword density for search engines. I'm going to make them aware of things that I think will make the site more appealing to their audience and make them want to come back, i.e. a sidebar with "tips" relevant to the market they are serving. Meanwhile, I will learn what I need to accomplish the project goals. Currently, I am trying to learn how to use Flash Components. It's not going very well because the tutorial is trying to introduce me to ActionScript and I just can't seem to get it, but I will... shortly. I just need to apply it. Necessary tools to keep you safe...
Posted on November 20, 2008 in Microsoft updates
There are three elements to keeping your personal computing safe. At least these are the minimum in todays internet environment. The three things that you need to have in place are an anti program, an adware identification and removal program and a fire wall. There are a lot of options for anti virus and a couple of options for adware programs. I have identified a couple that are free for personal home use. If you are in a commercial environment, you'll have to subscribe to another form of protection. For home / personal use, there is still on excellent anti virus program that is still free. The free version of AVG anti virus can be found by visiting Grisoft.com. It can be optioned to check for virus definitions every time you turn you computer on or connect to the internet. Another consideration is unwanted ads and adware being unknowingly installed on your computer, there is a free adware program available from LavaSoft. This is another excellent free application that can be updated with definitions at any time. It's a good practice to scan your computer at least once a week for unwanted adware programs installed. The other thing that needs to be checked is if you have Windows XP, make sure your firewall is activated. If it isn't, you would probably get a warning and a clickable link to the location to turn it on. In the event you want to check for yourself navigate to: click Start , click Control Panel , and then double-click Windows Firewall . There is a lot more information available from you help menu - just search for firewall to get a lot more details. This is just a reminder of what you probably already know. The Weekend Wrap-Up

Friday Night : After work Friday I went straight to the booze store to purchase the required supplies to make one of the drinks I featured on Friday's post, The Nomad (I used Bombay Sapphire gin instead of Vodka, however). A couple of those bad boys and I was in quite a mood. Then it was off to Tom's Little Havana for my usual Friday evening revelry. After Tom's, I went a few blocks over to Halifax's newest music venue, Stage Nine, where Slowcoaster were playing. This was probably about the millionth time I've seen them, roundabouts. The crowd was pretty thin at first, but things picked up towards the end. I danced for a good hour or so, so I must have been pretty drunk. The bar has a great patio, and I had some excellent conversations out there with Devon Strang's sister (I can never remember her name) and Shaun Purdy (we had a solid 15 minute discussion about Andre The Giant). Oh, and some weird girl (who was completely wasted, knackered, three sheets to the wind) kept on trying to dance (read: grope) with me. That sucked, so I solved the problem by dancing over to the edge of the dancefloor, where I noticed a lone, drunk, dancing male, and then quickly saying "I need another drink.", or something to that effect, and jetting off to the bar. By the time I got my drink, I could see that the lone male and the crazy weird girl were in the middle of what could only be classified as "PG-13 style heavy petting", so my crisis was averted (I'm just like Cupid, only a little different). Saturday : Giselle, Debra, and myself checked out Greek Fest over on Purcell's Cove Rd. Some meat on stick, shitty beer, decent wine, funny dancing in strange costumes. A good time was had by all. After that we headed over to the Oxford to see Super Size Me, which was fantastic, by the way. The movie has put me off fast food for at least a month or so, however (or maybe until the end of the week, who knows). Sunday : My roomate Mike and I decided to go golfing Sunday afternoon, so we got in the Volkswagon (thank the lord for roomates with cars!) and headed out. He said that he thought there was a course out on Purcell's Cove Rd., but after a good solid 15-20 minutes of driving out there, we still couldn't find one. Instead we found a 200 year old naval fortress. Along the highway we saw this weird concrete wall, and our natural curiousity drew us to investigate. We saw a clearing in the forest for a walking path, so we parked the car and headed out. What we had stumbled upon was York Redoubt, an old fortress that was built in the 1800's to protect Halifax Harbour. For a couple of history nerds like us, it was pretty cool indeed. Afterwards we headed downtown to The Old Triangle for some Sunday afternoon refreshment. We ended up watching most of the England-France European Cup soccer (ahem... I mean football ) game, drinking our lager and feeling like right football hooligans. I ended the night by again going to the theater to see The Stepford Wives. There were a few funny bits, but this didn't illicit too many laughs from yours truly. Also, whoever edited the movie should be taken out back to the learnin' tree for a severe whoopin', because I thought that the overall flow of the movie was terrible. Ah well, can't win em' all, I guess. Quite the action packed weekend, and I'm sure that you were all riveted by my colourfull account of it. Envy me and my busy social schedule (ha)! Now I can't wait for the Multicultural Festival in Dartmouth next weekend! buy software cheap oem software

"A Song of Love" © David A. Ziser I love the reason for this image. Again, it was made this past weekend during the reception. The bride's niece wanted to honor the couple with a very special song. She was presented with the microphone and began a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" The entire crowd loved it as did the bride and groom. I had my assistant positioned "and some-what dancing" behind the couple as the waltzed to the song giving their attention to the young lady singing. I had to increase the illumination on our young lady just a bit in Photoshop. I think it makes a great story telling image for the couple. buy software cheap oem software
